Missouri River Adventure Camp 2022 Reflection

Missouri River Adventure Camp Begins with a Blast!

Missouri River Relief's new day camp concluded on July 29th, 2022 after a week of adventures for our campers. 36 campers, all aged between 9 and 13 years, were given the chance to go on daily field trips to local parks and conservation areas in order to explore different aspects of their watershed.

Each morning, campers gathered at Waters-Moss Memorial Wildlife Area before boarding onto a bus meant for the day's destination. These field trips included taking hikes in Rock Bridge Memorial State Park, fishing and birding out of Eagle Bluffs Conservation Area, experiencing the Missouri River by motorboat and so much more.

Monday: Rock Bridge Memorial State Park

Day one saw our campers hiking through Rock Bridge Memorial State Park in order to learn about the fellow Missouri River watershed inhabitants, both large and small.

Campers got knee-deep in water under the rock bridge to interview our local stream creatures with Michele Woolbright of Boone County Stormwater Management.

They were also able to meet some native spiders on a spider hike! Campers learned about the differences in web structure and how spiders use these webs to hunt.

Tuesday: Boating and Biking Along the Missouri River

On Tuesday, campers traveled to Cooper's Landing Riverside Resort & Marina for a boat ride in one of Missouri River Relief's motorboats on the Big Muddy and a bike ride on the Katy Trail.

Activities got off to a late start due to inclement weather, but campers were kept busy by water coloring the scenic view from the Cooper's Landing stage.

While on the water, campers learned about the channelization of the Missouri River and its effect on some native species like the Pallid Sturgeon.

Wednesday: Fish and Birds Galore at Eagle Bluffs Conservation Area

Missouri River Relief was joined by birders Lottie Bushman of the Columbia Audubon Society and Paige Witek of Missouri River Bird Observatory. Lottie and Paige led them on a guided hike through Eagle Bluffs in search of feathered friends.

During the hike, campers were able to use binoculars on the birding expedition.

On the river, campers were able to meet with the Missouri Department of Conservation who supplied bait and rods for catfishing.

Thursday: Cleanup at MLK Park

Campers were able to spend a bright and sunny Thursday morning cleaning up Flat Branch Creek before thunderstorms rolled in for the afternoon.

Our campers waded into knee-deep water in order to pull litter from this local waterway.

Afterwards, the young creek stewards were walked to Forum 8 movie theater in order to catch a showing of Minions: The Rise of Gru.

Friday: Creative Art Project

Missouri River Adventure Camp culminated in a Creative Art Project. Campers spent the day working on their individual projects either showing off their favorite camp memory or creating a work that shares what they learned over the course of the week.

Families and friends were invited to attend a gathering held at the end of the day where their campers could present their Creative Art Projects to fresh eyes.
