Hartsburg Missouri River Cleanup 2013

Even on a chilly Saturday morning, over 190 volunteers teamed up at the MDC Public Boat Access in Hartsburg to help clean-up 9 miles of the Missouri River.  Over 115 bags of trash were collected and sorted through, resulting in 39 bags of recyclables, along with tons of scrap metal, appliances, and other materials including a small john boat! This was our third Hartsburg clean-up, and we really had to search hard to find the trash here. A huge shout out to the FEMA Americorps group for staying all afternoon and sorting through all the trash for recyclables.  Big thanks to Advanced Disposal and Jim's Tire Salvage for handling part of our waste stream.  And thanks to Terry Durham at Eridu Farms for letting our crew camp for the weekend at his beautiful elderberry farm!

Omaha/Council Bluffs Missouri River Cleanup 2013

248 volunteers showed up on a super hot day and promptly helped remove nearly 3 tons of junk from the banks of the river despite the forecast.  18 of those volunteers were from the Mutual of Omaha and Gallup, who came out a few days early to work an associates clean-up with us. With help of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers boats, we got everyone out on the river in about an hour and a half.  Supplied with trash bags, shovels, plenty of water and their gloved hands, we cleaned up about 11 miles of the river.

123 volunteers showed up and they removed 3.9 tons of junk from the banks of the river. 30 of those volunteers were from the Stienmetz 4-H organization in Glasgow, who also cleans up Highway 5. Other volunteers came from as far away as Kansas City, Chillicothe and Arnold. Glasgow residents love their river, and it shows. There is just not the normal amount of recreational and party trash as we find in most places. Stump Island Park is almost pristine. People take care of the river.

Washington River Festival and Cleanup 2013

Washington, Mo. is one of the most river-centric towns on the Lower Missouri River. The beautiful park overlooking the river is the ideal place to hold, not just a community river clean-up, but also a local river festival highlighting the town's connection to the river. 70 volunteers helped cleanup the Riverfront Trail, the park, along Tiemann Rd and at Dundee removing a whopping 2.7 tons of trash!  We estimate over a thousand people attended the River Festival, enjoying the music, art and great informative booths by a bunch of local and regional organizations.
